Tool Spotlight: Alterx for Fast Subdomain Permutation

Passive reconnaissance will only get you so far. When you use tools like Subfinder, you're relying on historical dataācertificates that were logged, or APIs that were scraped. But what happens when an engineering team spins up dev-api-v3.target.com and hasn't exposed it anywhere publicly yet?
You won't find it in crt.sh. You won't find it in VirusTotal.
To find undocumented assets, you have to guess. But brute-forcing a massive wordlist against a wildcard DNS is incredibly slow. You need intelligent permutation. Enter Alterx by ProjectDiscovery.
If you are serious about modern web reconnaissance, Alterx is the missing link between your passive asset list and your active resolution engine.
What is Alterx?
Alterx is a fast, highly customizable DNS permutation engine written in Go. You feed it a list of known, valid subdomains (your passive recon results), and it analyzes the patterns in those names to generate hundreds or thousands of highly probable, completely undocumented subdomains.
For example, if you feed it prod-api-v1.target.com, Alterx will automatically output:
dev-api-v1.target.comstaging-api-v1.target.comprod-api-v2.target.comtest-api.target.com
It understands environments, numbers, and common infrastructure naming conventions.
How Alterx fits into your pipeline: taking a small seed list, expanding it via intelligent mutation, and feeding it into a rapid DNS resolver.
Installation & Setup
Since it's written in Go, installation is incredibly simple. Just make sure you have your Go path configured correctly.
